About this deal

I normalized both files in Sony Sound Forge, 1 was decreased and 2 was increased slightly. 1 has more HF extention and slightly more open. Both had decent HF extension out to 12.7 khz, but 1 had more vol at this region.

Not matter how other people have his own setup on phono preamplifier, results can show where is weak point. ARTA need a compesation to calibrate input signal as all measuring tools. Most of that independent measurements on audio cards are from sound card outputs and most of modern sound cards have prety nice flat frequency responses on its output. On ARTA handbook you can to see complete "how to" chapter with simple instruction for calibrating sound card inputs. My SH arrived earlier this week and I'll hopefully get some time to listen to it properly this weekend. My subjective sense of the ML matches yours, and I'm very much hoping to find the same changes with the SH. I'll be changing only the stylus so it should be "fair" in that sense, although I can't promise level-matching to the nth degree. The EMI regulationss is one point that most modern amps / receivers have such high capacity in the phono section. The albums- PJ Harvey- Dry, George Benson- the Shape of Things to Come, Sonic Youth- Dirty, Nina Simone- Sings the Blues. Anti skate wouldnt change much I dont think and depending on your model, if its pre 2017 it doesnt really have functioning anti skate anyway. Ok, so some people try to guess which is which, but that's not what Michael asked. He asked which file we prefer, 1 or 2. To start with, I tested crosstalk (stereo separation) between the channels. For this I used the 1k test tones on the LP and then measured in Audacity after applying some noise filters. File 2 is smoother with deeper bass and better bass control. It doesn't seem as punchy as File 1, but it has more finesse. I founded Audio Appraisal a few years ago and continue to regularly update it with fresh content. An avid vinyl collector and coffee addict, I can often be found at a workbench tinkering with a faulty electronic device, tweaking a turntable to extract the last bit of detail from those tiny grooves in the plastic stuff, or relaxing in front of the hi-fi with a good album. The stereo- Technics SL1500C turntable w/ KAB damper, Graham Slee Era Gold V preamp, Yamaha A-S801 amp, JBL L82 speakers, Rythmik L12 sub. I bought AT-VM95ML/H on recomendation on another thread just before Christmas and I was and I still am impressed with the ML. I really have to crank up my volume on that LP to get any sort of decent headroom, maybe the ML will open things up for stuff like that. I am not sure I have a favorite which is really weird because both sound so different. File 1 sounds more "audiophile" to be sure. It has more HF extension, more definition. File 2 however has a mellow (warm) sound which I could easily live with especially if I had lots of recordings that could benefit from a softer presentation. I’d forgotten the need for some break in time ! Now, my VM95E has acceptable inner groove distortion level and is a pleasure to listen to.The way is to get a phono preamp where you can adjust the capacity to about 100pf. This should solve your problem.

I prefer a balanced sound with nice low (tight and deep) and realistic/clean detail at the top. (lol... so I want everything in one hehehhe). I used the handbook to run some of the calibrations. One of them I could not do because I don't have a multimeter, and many multimeters don't seem to be that accurate. When I re-ran the test after the 2 calibrations I could do, the results were basically the same. I work in a Vintage Vinyl Store part time and I often bring home vinyl that sounds bad at work but then I play it on my

I have a similar turntable and phono pre as OP. However, everything else about my system (amp, speakers, etc.) is very different. I don't have OP's ears, room acoustics, or their record collection. No "thin" or "sterile" here either. OMG am I embarrassed. Many may have noticed that I trashed the sound of both files and by extension the album itself. My system may not be at the same level as most of your readers but it's honestly not that bad-plus I have the 2m Blue in my turntable. Without being facetious, why not just invest in better records? If your source is garbage, no amount of upgrading will improve the sound, especially if audible issues are caused by physical defects. Is this overt crispness an anti-skate issue? I have my anti-skate set to match VTF as per AT's rec.
